Don't Look At The Empty Seats

Years ago, I had the opportunity to interview country music legend Charlie Daniels. It’s a moment I’ve never forgotten—not because of the music, not because of the fame, but because of one simple, powerful statement he made:
“Don’t look at the empty seats.”
That one sentence has stayed with me all these years, and the older I get, the more I realize—it doesn’t just apply to a stage. It applies to life.
The Empty Seat Trap
Imagine you’re an entertainer. You’ve poured your heart into your craft. You’ve prepared, practiced, sacrificed—and then you walk out on stage.
And there they are… empty seats.
It would be so easy to fixate on them.
To wonder:
Why didn’t more people come?
Why didn’t they show up?
Why don’t they support me?
But what happens when you do that?
You completely overlook the people who did show up.
And the truth is—we do this in our everyday lives more than we realize.
I see it in business. I own a radio station, and there are businesses that choose not to advertise with us. I could spend my time focused on who isn’t supporting us… or I can focus on the ones who believe in what we’re doing and trust us with their business.
The same is true in relationships. In friendships. On social media. In our families.
We fixate on:
The people who don’t like us
The ones who don’t support us
The ones who overlook us
And we let that consume our thoughts.
What You Miss When You Focus on What’s Missing
When your focus is on the “empty seats,” something dangerous happens—you start to believe your life is lacking.
But it’s not.
It’s your perspective that’s off.
Because while you’re staring at what’s missing, you’re missing what’s right in front of you.
There are people:
Cheering you on
Supporting you
Believing in you
Showing up for you
And they deserve your attention far more than the ones who don’t.
When you focus on what’s missing:
You drain your energy
You create unnecessary discouragement
You lose gratitude
And no matter how full your life actually is… it will always feel empty.
The People Who Did Show Up
Take a moment and think about your life.
Who are the people who have been there for you?
Who supports you, encourages you, and believes in you?
Those are your people.
Those are your “front row” people.
And they matter.
They are the ones worth your time, your energy, and your gratitude.
Because here’s the truth:
There are people in your life clapping for you right now—and you’re missing it because you’re focused on who isn’t.
You Can’t Control the Empty Seats
This is something we all need to come to terms with:
You cannot make people support you.
You cannot make people like you.
You cannot make people show up.
No amount of overthinking, worrying, or analyzing will change that.
So why spend your life trying?
Instead, you get to choose:
Where your focus goes
What you dwell on
How you respond
You can choose peace.
You can choose gratitude.
You can choose to let it go.
Gratitude Changes Everything
When you shift your focus from what’s missing to what you have, everything changes.
Your mindset changes.
Your energy changes.
Your outlook changes.
Because instead of living in frustration, you begin living in appreciation.
And appreciation will always bring more peace than frustration ever could.
If you constantly focus on what’s not there, your life will always feel incomplete—even when it’s full.
But when you start recognizing the good, the support, and the blessings already in your life… you begin to see just how much you truly have.
Final Thought
I’ve never forgotten those words from Charlie Daniels:
“Don’t look at the empty seats.”
Because your life isn’t empty.
There are people who love you.
People who support you.
People who are showing up for you right now.
Don’t miss them because you’re focused on the ones who aren’t.
Look at who’s there.
Appreciate them.
Build from that.
And let the empty seats be exactly what they are—
irrelevant.
