Most of us understand the dangers of a physical heart condition.
When arteries become hardened, blood flow is restricted, and serious health problems can follow.
But there is another heart condition that often goes unnoticed—a hardened heart.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly warns His people about the dangers of allowing their hearts to become hard. Hebrews 3:8 tells us, "Do not harden your hearts." Jesus also spoke about hearts that had become dull and unresponsive to God's truth (Matthew 13:14-15).
A hardened heart doesn't happen overnight.
It develops slowly.
A disappointment we never release.
A wound we refuse to forgive.
An offense we continue to replay.
An anger we choose to nurture.
Over time, bitterness begins to take up residence in our hearts. The more space bitterness occupies, the less room there is for love, grace, compassion, and obedience to God.
As our hearts harden, we become less sensitive to God's voice. We may continue going through the motions of faith, but inwardly we begin drifting from Him.
This is why Proverbs reminds us to guard our hearts diligently, because everything we do flows from them.
The encouraging news is that God is in the business of heart restoration.
No matter how long bitterness, anger, or resentment has lived in your heart, God can heal what has been damaged. He can soften what has become hard and restore what has become broken.
Ezekiel 36:26 contains one of the most beautiful promises in Scripture:
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."
Today is a good day for a heart check.
Ask yourself:
Is there someone I need to forgive?
Am I holding onto bitterness?
Have I become resistant to God's leading?
Is my heart growing softer or harder toward others?
Whatever God reveals, give it to Him.
The Great Physician is still healing hearts today.
Not just physically.
Spiritually.
And when He restores the heart, everything else begins to change.
